In order to protect the poly-IC within Hiltonol<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> against this enzyme, the double helix is complexed with two further polymers, poly-lysine (poly-L) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). In a phase-I trial, intranasal Hiltonol<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> was found to be safe and immunogenic in healthy volunteers.
